Are Meta ads free or paid?

Meta ads cost money. There is no free lunch. You pay to play in an auction-style bidding system for feed real estate. Organic reach has declined significantly—the algorithm simply does not show unpaid content to a wide audience anymore.

The pay model offers flexibility. You set daily or lifetime budgets, choose auto or manual bidding. The minimum can be pennies for some spots, but $1 a day won't gather meaningful data. Test tiny budgets of $5-10 to probe ideas, then scale winners.

Why pay? Scale. Billions of users demand precision, and that costs money. Without paid reach, your content may only reach friends and family. For a business, organic is fine for a hobby but paid builds a business.

The setup is simple: create an Ads Manager account, add a payment method, and you are live. You can pause anytime with no lock-in contracts. There are no free passes in 2026—privacy changes have reduced supply and increased bids across the board.
